About the Job

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available starting immediately at the University of Minnesota Center for Drug Design for applied and basic science research on NIH-funded projects involving herpesvirus, flavivirus, and coronavirus drug discovery. This position will design and carry out experiments to contribute to ongoing projects in the laboratory as we seek to identify preclinical drug candidates to treat or prevent human viral pathogen infections. This position will also report key findings using approved notebook practices, in research discussions, at scientific meetings and in primary research manuscripts.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
60% Primary research

  • Conduct laboratory experiments specific to preclinical drug discovery projects. Assist in the definition of specific strategies for initiation and execution of research projects. Identify problems related to the research and recommend solutions.

10% Training

  • Maintain familiarity with up-to-date laboratory safety protocols and employ them, including all necessary approved biosafety levels.

10% Record keeping

  • Exercise careful experimentation and record keeping in approved laboratory notebooks using approved practices. Prepare manuscripts describing the results of the research.

10% Professional communication

  • Participate in research discussions with members of the research teams in a highly collaborative research environment

10% Service

  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of the laboratory and its equipment. Assist with ordering and replenishment of laboratory supplies.

Supervision:

  • Supervise undergraduate lab researchers should their project overlap with that of this position.

Working Conditions:

  • The majority of work in this position will be in a laboratory setting using dedicated instruments and equipment
  • Significant time will be spent in meetings discussing results and working on assembling manuscripts based upon those results
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, virology, or related field
  • Strong background in the ideas and concepts of molecular biology, biochemistry or virology and the requisite laboratory skills to test those ideas and concepts
  • Published work in international peer-reviewed journals

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with recombinant protein expression, cell culture, viruses or in drug discovery
