Duties and Responsibilities
Job Summary:
Under general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, perform routine grounds maintenance and repair duties on campus grounds, including landscaped areas and athletic fields; maintain lawns, grounds and other cultivated areas; and operate and maintain a variety of light and heavy power grounds equipment to perform grounds maintenance work.
Work at this level is distinguished from the Grounds Worker I position by the level of complexity and the degree of independence and judgement with which the employee is expected to perform. Examples include the operation of more complex equipment which requires higher level licenses and/or training certifications. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a team, providing a variety of landscape maintenance duties including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, edging, renovating, and fertilizing lawns
  • Install plantings and transfer plant material between locations
  • Maintain sustainable landscape features such as green roofs, native landscapes, rain gardens and bioswales
  • Apply fertilizer or pesticides
  • Empty trash and recycling containers on the exterior of campus buildings
  • Assist with moving furniture between buildings as well as between campuses
  • Dig ditches, holes and trenches as necessary
  • Rake leaves and/or clear debris from walks, fields, courts, parking lots, and other open areas; load, remove, dispose of trimmings and cuttings; pick-up trash and empty trash receptacles
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed
  • Assists with hardscape installations, maintenance and repairs including benches, pavers, blocks, decorative stone and border edging
  • Remove broken and lay new permeable pavers as needed
  • Operate light Grounds equipment such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, lawn edgers, and snow blowers
  • Operates Grounds maintenance equipment including trucks, tractor, skid steer, forklift and other vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to vehicles, equipment, and tools; make minor adjustments and repairs; report the need for major repairs and maintenance
  • Complete training in the use of heavy equipment as well as classes related to landscaping in order to continually improve professional skills
  • Assist in the field training of Ground Workers I to help develop level of experience
  • During inclement weather assist with other duties as assigned. Such as assisting in building inspections and inclement weather preparedness.
  • Perform related duties as required

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
High School Diploma, Trade School or GED graduate
Five years of horticultural or landscape experience preferred
Valid Class C driver's license or ability to obtain one.
Illinois pesticide operator's license.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a grounds maintenance program
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of mowing, edging, pruning, and trimming a variety of grasses, shrubs and trees
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices in the use of grounds equipment
- Knowledge of basic principles of the campus irrigation system, and familiar with emergency shut-offs and quick-coupler connections
- Ability to use tools of the trade
- Ability to carry materials to perform work functions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be in good physical condition with the ability to assist with snow removal and other labor-intensive requests
- Must be able to work irregular hours if needed for call-in response for snow removal or other campus emergencies
- Must be able to work successfully with other trades to perform job duties
Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
Must have a valid driver's license in good standing, and maintain the license while employed as at Loyola
Must have or acquire necessary certification for the safe application of pesticides
