Tufts University: Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine: Comparative Pathobiology

Description

Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications from enthusiastic, highly motivated, board-certified veterinary pathologists with management and diagnostic experience to serve as Director of the Cummings School Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL) (). The CVDL primarily serves Cummings School hospitals and clinics, which care for approximately 100,000 animals per year, and supports the clinical, teaching, and research missions of the school.

The Director, reporting to the Dean, will be responsible for all aspects of CVDL operations including strategic planning and personnel, material, and fiscal management. Additionally, the Director will have the critical and exciting opportunity to lead our efforts to identify areas for expansion of in-house testing. The CVDL offers necropsy, biopsy, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, clinical pathology, and other related diagnostic services. The CVDL is currently supported by four anatomic pathologists, four clinical pathologists, an assistant director (staff position), and 13 - 15 technical staff. We are in the process of reestablishing our anatomic pathology and clinical pathology residency programs.

The Anatomic Pathology Service processes approximately 2,300 biopsies and 550 necropsies per year. The Clinical Pathology Laboratory performs hematology and clinical chemistry tests, urinalyses, fecal tests, cytology/fluid analyses, coagulation tests and a variety of other miscellaneous diagnostic tests serving over 50,000 clinical cases per year. We are exploring expansion in areas such as microbiology testing and serology, molecular, and endocrinology tests; these are currently sent to outside diagnostic laboratories. The CVDL receives a rich diversity of cases, both routine and unique, providing ample teaching and research resources.

The successful applicant will hold an academic appointment in the (CPB). In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Director will contribute to diagnostic services in their specialty, teach within the DVM curriculum, mentor residents, and contribute to the academic program of small and large animal house officers. We encourage engagement in independent and collaborative research, as well as scholarly activities as they become available. These include scholarly partnerships with biomedical researchers at Cummings School, Tufts University, and with other regional partners. The department houses the (CPGSR) which provides research services to internal and external clients and the recently established Flow Cytometry Shared Resources (FCM-SR). Areas of research strengths in CPB and the School include neuroscience, clinical research, cardiovascular health, comparative oncology, infectious disease, global health, and animal-human interactions and policy. See for additional areas of ongoing research.
