Tenure Track Faculty Journalism Job No: 532335 Work Type: Instructional Faculty - Tenured/Tenure-Track Location: Sacramento Categories: Unit 3 - CFA - California Faculty Association, Tenured/Tenure-Track, Full Time, Faculty - Communications/Journalism COLLEGE: Arts & Letters DEPARTMENT: Communication Studies POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor of Multimedia Journalism DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Sacramento State Journalism program, part of the Communication Studies Department, emphasizes research, writing and editing for interactive media, and other courses necessary to prepare students for success in media-related jobs. It also includes courses that critically examine media as an institution. We educate about 200 journalism and political-science journalism majors. Some of our recent graduates work at digital news organizations and television and radio stations as producers, editors or reporters. Others work in a diverse range of media, in public relations and as communications staff for government agencies, nonprofits and other organizations in which multimedia and broadcast skills are essential. Sacramento State is home to The State Hornet, an award-winning online-only news organization featuring video and podcasts. The Associated Collegiate Press recently recognized the Hornet with a Pacemaker Award - the nation's top award for college news organizations. It was the Hornet's third Pacemaker Award in six years. POSITION DETAILS: This positions will be a specialist in multimedia journalism and will be hired in a tenure-track appointment as an assistant professor to start in the Fall 2024 semester. The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 - $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $74,642. JOB DUTIES: The Assistant Professor of Multimedia Journalism will teach introductory and advanced level courses in reporting, writing and multimedia production including, but not limited to Journalism 125 (Multimedia Reporting) and Journalism 130A and 130B (News Reporting I and II), and provide curricular leadership, with opportunities to create and develop new courses. They will advise diverse students; engage in scholarly and/or creative activities such as producing journalism that is published or broadcast by reputable news outlets and/or writing peer-reviewed journal articles; and provide service to the department, campus and local community. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - A master's degree or higher in Journalism or a closely allied field. - At least five years of experience as a reporter, producer or editor in professional journalism. - A demonstrated record and/or potential to teach and advise students from diverse backgrounds and identities. - Documented experience working in multimedia and/or broadcast media and using online platforms. - Demonstrated record and experience in or potential for teaching excellence.
