Job Summary |
The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering's National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (
NCAME) is accepting applications for a
Laboratory Research Engineer. This position will work in a mechanical test laboratory and will be responsible for set up, operation, and upkeep of multiple
MTS mechanical test stands, conduct exciting and innovative research in metal-additive manufacturing (AM) At
NCAME, and be at the forefront of metal AM research and will gain hands-on experience dening the state of the art in AM processes and materials.
NCAME research projects are sponsored by defense and aerospace agencies as well as industry.
As an
NCAME Research Engineer, you will work in a mechanical test laboratory and will be responsible for set up, operation, and upkeep of multiple
MTS mechanical test stands. You should have or be willing to gain a working knowledge of
MTS servo hydraulic test systems, and the several types of static and dynamic tests performed on this equipment. You will also train graduate students to use this equipment for various tests as needed for specic projects.

NCAME was born for AM!
NCAME was founded in 2017 through a collaboration between Auburn University (AU) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (
NASA) leveraged by a signed AU/
NASA Space Act Agreement. The Center is also a founding partner of the
ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE).
NCAME strives to be a transitioning mechanism from fundamental to applied research aligned with the needs of industry. The Center also aims to lead and foster effective collaborations amongst industry, government, academia, non-profit organizations, and
ASTM committees for ensuring a coordinated, global effort toward rapidly closing standards and workforce development gaps in AM. Both Centers have vast membership networks with 100+ members within key industrial sectors, including among others GE, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Aerojet and Rocketdyne.
Some highlights of NCAME equipment:
Additive Machines - 8 L-
PBF printers including
EOS M-290 and Renishaw AM500Q Flex; one
DED Printer; three more to be acquired this year.
Mechanical Testing Equipment - 14 mechanical test stands including three furnaces for high temperature testing up to 1500C.
Materials Characterization Equipment - Zeiss scanning electron microscope
, Zeiss X-ray microscope.
Sample Prep and Shop Equipment - Polisher,
CNC lathe, wire-
EDM, milling machine, heat treatment furnaces. |
Essential Functions |
Prepares test equipment and executes various tests as required by
NCAME projects.
Ensures test equipment and related instruments are operational and calibrated using defined preventative maintenance and calibration schedules.
Manages and maintains all test related software and computer hardware.
Works with Facilities to define, develop, and refine new and existing laboratory space as necessary.
Designs and procures new test equipment, fixtures, components, and systems as necessary.
Ensures laboratory related supplies are available and operational for use in projects.
Trains and monitors graduate students in usage of test equipment. |

US Citizenship required.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Engineering including Material Science, Aerospace, Biosystems, Chemical, Civil, Software, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical and Materials at the time employment begins.
Substitutions allowed for Education:
When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.
